Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. “We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called ‘next-generation format war’ and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop” said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation.
The company says that they will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.
According to studio sources Warner Bros., will continue as planned and keep releasing HD DVDs until May 31st 2008.
Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment, is reported to have said “While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray”.
Will Microsoft now launch a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360?
People with HD DVD recorders will no doubt still be able to buy blank media for some time to come and record their own HD footage.
I can look forward to only having to try and sell one format of HD player/recorder.
Comet reveals today that men really don’t know what women want this Valentine’s Day. 23% of women hope to receive gadgets but 93% of men still opt to buy chocolates and flowers. The survey, undertaken by YouGov on behalf of Comet between 21st-23rd January 2008, questioned a nationally representative sample of 2,000 adults and the results challenge the popular belief that jewellery and flowers will please a girl on Valentine’s Day.
Over a fifth of women would prefer a gadget, such as a Sat Nav, MP3 Player, hair straighteners or a camera. However, just 7% of the nation’s men will buy gadgets this Valentine’s Day for the woman in their lives.
In contrast, women know exactly what men want this Valentine’s Day as nearly a third of women admit that they will buy gadgets for the men in their lives.
Ladies, what happened to the days when a simple Valentine’s card would suffice…. or was that never the case?!
